Documents you need to register a motorcycle
No papers, no plate. Keep every document you get with your bike, and check your state's list before you go. Here is what is usually needed.
Papers you get when you buy
- Sales receipt / invoice — shows who sold the bike, to whom, the price and the frame and engine numbers.
- Import (customs) documents — show the bike was brought into the country properly. The frame and engine numbers on them must match the bike.
- Owner's manual — not needed for registration, but keep it for warranty and servicing.
When you buy from Moto Power we provide the documents you need to register your bike in any Nigerian state. Check that the numbers match before you sign for delivery (see how to check a bike).
What the licensing office usually asks for
- The sales receipt and the customs papers.
- A valid means of identification for the owner, and often passport photographs.
- Proof of address may be requested.
- Third-party insurance for the bike.
After registration you usually receive the number plates, a vehicle licence and proof of ownership papers. Keep copies in a safe place and the originals that you must carry on the bike.
For the rider
The person riding needs a valid rider's licence. Commercial riders (okada, dispatch) may also need a permit or union registration in some states and areas — ask your state and your local riders' association.
Tips
- Register in the name of the person who will own the bike — changing it later costs extra time.
- Use only official offices and payment channels; ask for receipts for every fee.
- Make photocopies and phone photos of every document.
